The Story Behind the Song

John's Message

John Wasson had a simple but powerful idea: thank the people who show up every day to care for veterans.

The song exists to recognize the often-unseen work of nurses, aides, doctors, cooks, therapists, caregivers, support staff, and every person helping veterans through care, dignity, and respect.

Core message: every act of service matters. Every act of kindness matters. Every person who cares for veterans matters.

WHAT YOU DO MATTERS Dedicated to the Grand Junction VA Hospital CLC Wing Inspired and Written by: John Wasson [Spoken Introduction] This one is for the hands that heal, the hearts that serve, and every soul inside the Grand Junction VA who makes a veteran feel seen. [Chorus] What you do matters, more than you know, in the heart of a soldier where the old memories go. You lift up the wounded, you honor the brave, in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Raise that flag high, let the whole world see, love still serves where the heroes sleep. What you do matters, yes, it shines on through, Grand Junction VA, this song is for you. [Spoken Dedication Outro] To the nurses, the cooks, the caregivers, and every worker on the VA CLC Wing, thank you for the care, dignity, and respect you give to our veterans every single day. Your work matters. Your kindness matters. Your service makes a difference.
